Spandau, Berlin, Germany

Spandau is the fifth and westernmost borough (Bezirk) of Berlin, situated at the confluence of the Havel and Spree rivers and along the western bank of the Havel. It is one of the oldest areas in the Berlin region and still retains much of its own unique character, having been spared the worst of the Allied bombing in the Second World War.

The center of the town is formed by a dense network of medieval streets and a market square, still retaining a large number of timber-framed buildings. A major tourist attraction is the Spandau Citadel, a Renaissance fortress built in the 16th century. The Citadel served as a prison and a treasury. Today it has been restored and is open to visitors.
