Wittow, Germany

Wittow is the northernmost peninsula of the island of Rügen. Wittow was a separate isle until the High Middle Ages, since then it is connected to the Jasmund peninsula of Rügen by the Schaabe spit.

Wittow is a wind-battered and sparsley populated place which is most famous for Cape Arkona and its lighthouses. There are also the remnants of a former Slawic temple-castle that was conquered and destroyed by the Danes in 1168.

Port Location – There is a harbor located at nearby Wikke, however the largest port is located at Sassnitz.

Transport Links – Rügen's airport is located in Güttin, with regular flights from Berlin and Uetersen (near Hamburg); flights from Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel are also possible.

You can get in by car along the bridge from Stralsund on the German mainland, or you can take the ferry from Trelleborg in southern Sweden. There is also a cable ferry from Stahlbrode near Greifswald to Glewitz on Rügen.

There is also a regional train connection from Stralsund to Sassnitz and Ostseebad Binz, some long distance trains travel to Ostseebad Binz.
