Astrakhan is a major city in southern European Russia. It lies on the left bank of the Volga River, close to where it runs into the Caspian Sea. The city is built on eleven islands and is known for its many bridges, canals and channels.

The main attraction in Astrakhan is the Kremlin built in 1582 – 1589. It is comprised of five architectural and historical elements which include the Red Gate tower, an example of 16th century military engineering, the 16th century Artillery Yard and the 16th century Torture Tower.
