Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is a 15th century Inca site located in the Cusco Region of Peru, South America. Machu Picchu was declared a Peruvian Historical Sanctuary in 1981 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The story of Machu Picchu is quite a remarkable one; it is still unknown exactly what the site was in terms of its place in Inca life. Most archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472).

There are many places amongst the ruins to explore. Visitors can take a guided tour which provides a good insight into the ancient city. The main sites include the Sun Gate, Temple of the Sun, the intihuatana, the Temple of the Windows, the Main Temple and the Temple of the Condor.
