Tiritiri Matangi Island, New Zealand

Tiritiri Matangi Island lies in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand, 4 km (2.5 mi) east of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula in the North Island and 30 km (19 mi) north east of Auckland.

The island is a wildlife sanctuary and one of New Zealand’s most important conservation projects. It has undergone a planting program and all mammalian predators were eradicated to allow the reintroduction of a number of bird and reptilian species. Visitors to the island can take guided walks, view birdlife and wildlife, walk to the lighthouse or visit the Visitor centre.
