Kabara, Fiji

Kabara island is one of the Fijian Lau group of islands, located approximately 250 km’s from the Fijian capital, Suva. The island is composed mostly of limestone and is surrounded by a continuous emergent barrier and fringing reef. There are four main coastal villages on the island including Naikeleaga, Tokalau, Lomati and Udu.

The islanders are noted for their craftsmanship in the area of wood carving. Vesi wood, which grows natively on Kabara, is the traditional material, but unfortunately deforestation has stripped the island of this resource.
