Preveza, Greece

Preveza is a town in north-western Greece. It is the capital of Preveza Prefecture, which is part of Epirus periphery. A new under sea tunnel, which runs between Preveza and Aktio of Acarnania, connects the town to Thesprotia and Lefkada and western Aetolia in Aetolia-Acarnania. Preveza lies near the western part of the Ambracian Gulf.

Preveza has many ancient sites such as the ancient Kassopi, the Aheron River where Necromancy was practiced and the ancient city of Nikopolsi, one of the most important cities in the Roman Empire, and was established in 31BC by Octavious Augustus.

There are two castles in Preveza, the Castle of St Andrew's which is located to the north of Preveza, and the Castle of St George's located at the southern end of the city. The main fortress of Preveza is called Fortress of Pantokrator after the name of a small church built on its top. The fortress is located 2 miles to the west of Preveza and it is built on the coast of the Ionian Sea. The site is now abandoned and because it is very easily accessible it looks bound for a rapid deterioration.
