Chioggia, Italy

Chioggia is a coastal town and comune of the province of Venice in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The town is situated on a small island at the southern entrance to the Lagoon of Venice about 25 km south of Venice (50 km by road); causeways connect it to the mainland and to the beaches at nearby Sottomarina. In summer, Chioggia makes a good base for exploring Venice.

Chioggia is a miniature version of Venice, with a few canals, chief among them the Canale Vena, and the characteristic narrow streets known as calli. The Corso del Popolo, the wide main street through the heart of the historic center, is a good place for strolling, shopping, or enjoying a drink. The Piazzetta Vigo and Bridge Piazzetta Vigo is at the end of Corso del Popolo by the port. From the square a picturesque white marble bridge crosses the Vena Canal to the Church of San Domenico. Chioggia also has several medieval churches, much reworked in the period of its greatest prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries.
