Dunvegan, Scotland

Dunvegan is located on the west side of the Isle of Skye, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Scotland. Dunvegan is best known for Dunvegan Castle which is located roughly a mile north of the village. The castle sprawls on top of a rocky outcrop, sandwiched between the sea and several acres of beautifully maintained gardens. It has been the seat of the Clan MacLeod since the 13th century, but the present fortress dates from the 1840s.

From the jetty outside the castle there are regular seal-spotting boat trips out along Loch Dunvegan, as well as longer and less frequent sea cruises to the small islands of Mingay, Isay and Clett.

Now that the Skye Bridge is open (and toll-free!), it is no longer essential to travel to Skye by boat, but it is still an enjoyable ride. The main route to the mainland is on the Caledonian Macbride ferry between Armadale and Mallaig. Skyeferry also operates in summer between Glenelg and Kylerhea. For the Outer Hebrides, Calmac run to Uig from Tarbert on Harris and Lochmaddy on North Uist. Three Scottish Citylink coaches a day run from Portree to Kyle of Lochalsh, Fort William, and Glasgow or Inverness. Local buses also run every 30 minutes over the Skye Bridge between Kyleakin and Kyle of Lochalsh.
