Ferrol, Spain

Ferrol is an Atlantic-facing city in the Province of A Coruña in Galicia in north-western Spain. The town is divided into three areas, old Ferrol, new Ferrol and Esterio. Old Ferrol, which occupies the west side of the town, is busy with the active life of the port. It is the most ancient part and was once surrounded by walls, large sections of which still remain.

In New Ferrol the visitor will find the Plaza de Armas where there is a large fountain in honour of Churruca, and in Plaza de Amboage a statue of the philanthropic marquis after whom the square is named. Plaza de la Constitución, opposite the arsenals, joins the delightful promenades of the Cantón de Molíns (with the Town Hall), and the Alameda. The Gardens of Herrera (statue of San Juan) provide a quiet, restful retreat at the west of the main street, in the centre of which is the 18th century Church of San Julián. The Church of El Espíritu Santo contains some fine paintings.

The Esteiro, with its wide, parallel streets, is situated between the naval shipyards and the New Ferrol and has a square of the same name as its centre.

There are train routes from Portugal and cities in Spain (best one is probably from Madrid), although the service is slow and the choice of times is not the best.

Galicia has three international airports (A Coruña, Vigo and Santiago de Compostela), where the main one is at the capital, Santiago de Compostela. This airport (called Lavacolla) connects Galicia with a number of European cities, such as London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Liverpool, and Rome. There also are flights from and to Paris from Vigo and Lisbon from A Coruña. There are plenty of flights to a number of Spanish cities and the odd flight to South America.
