Alite Harbour, Solomons

Alite Harbour is located in Malaita Province, one of the largest provinces of the Solomon Islands. It is named for its largest island, Malaita . Other islands include, Sikaiana Island, and Ontong Java Atoll. The provincial capital and largest urban center is Auki, located on Big Malaita.

Alite Harbour is home to a string of man made islands, built many centuries ago by the people of Malatia, to protect them from inland bushmen. The village is very traditional, and is said to still trade shells as money, using this traditional currency for ‘purchasing’ a bride. Friendly villagers can provide demonstrations of traditional cooking, basket weaving and palm thatching.
