Hyder, Alaska

Hyder is located at the head of the Portland Canal, a 115 km (70 mile) long fjord which forms a portion of the border between the United States and Canada at the southeastern edge of the Alaska Panhandle. Hyder is 3 km (2 miles) from Stewart, British Columbia and 120 km (75 miles) from Ketchikan by air.

Known as the “Friendliest Ghost Town in Alaska,” charming Hyder is the home of Fish which offers a unique opportunity to view and photograph Alaskan Brown (Grizzlies) and Black bears. The bears come here to feed on the chum and pink salmon which spawn in the creek. From July to September, the salmon run provides an extensive food supply for bears, gulls and bald eagles.
