Mykines, Denmark

Mykines is the western-most of the main 18 islands in the Faroe Islands, a group of islands in Northern Europe, between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean. They have been an autonomous province of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.

Mykines is the perfect place for bird watching; in particular the puffin and gannets. Hiking is also popular on the island. Apart from the excursion to the stone forest in the valley Korkadalur, the towering summit of 560 metre Knúkur awaits the hiker. It is only some three kilometres away from the village, but the climb can be difficult.

On the western side of Mykines is Mykineshólmur, a small islet connected by footbridge to Mykines over a 35-metre deep gorge. The sea stacks surrounding the lighthouse at the far end of the cape are a sight of outstanding beauty.
