Kekova, Turkey

Kekova, also named Caravola (Lycian: Dolichiste), is a small Turkish island near Kaş (ancient Antiphellos) district of Antalya province which faces the villages of Kaleköy (ancient Simena) and Üçağız (ancient Teimioussa).

At Kekova is Batik Sehir, the sunken city running along the eastern shore of the island. Demolished by an earthquake, this now submerged Byzantine settlement can be seen quite clearly. On the opposite shore the ruin of Kalekoy Castle with its rock-cut amphitheatre, built by the knights of St John, overlooks the cluster of simple houses that form the village of Kale (ancient Simena). Visit the well preserved collection of Lycian sarcophagi lying in the olive groves and ruins of public baths on the shore.
