Tahuata, French Polynesia

Tahuata is the smallest of the inhabited Marquesas Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is located 4 km to the south of the western end of Hiva Oa, across the Canal du Bordelais, called Ha‘ava in Marquesan. The administrative centre of the commune is the settlement of Vaitahu, on the western side of the island.

Tahuata doesn’t receive many visitors, however there are a number of attractions on the island. These include the villages of Hapatoni and Vaitahu, the Valley of Hanateio where there are many well preserved petroglyphs. The Vaitahu town hall and the arts centre at Hapatoni are also worth a visit.
