Bau-Bau or Bau-bau is the main city on Buton island, Indonesia. It lies on the southern part of south east Sulawesi region, bordered at the north by the Buton strait.

Buton Island is well known for its asphalt, called Buton or Butas Asphalt, and for its teak and ironwood. The most fascinating cultural aspect of Buton Island can be enjoyed when local people conduct ceremonies, celebrations and folk events, which welcome honored guests. One such unique event is "Pakande-kandea", when foods and cakes are offered to visitors and traditional dances are performed.

Port Location - A port called Murhum serves the city sea transportation with a ferry terminal (jetty) operated by the Indonesian state-owned sealiner, Pelni.

Travel Links – Port Murhum serves the city's, and also the island's, main access for transportation. Direct sea connections include Jakarta and Kendari. There is daily boat service from Kendari, with a stopover in Raha, the capital city of Muna Island.

Transportation by air plane is available three times a week through Makassar.
